On Saturday, Jan. 4, the South Gwinnett wrestling team competed in the regional tournament and finished in third place. Pinning down a third place win has given the team more motivation to continue to succeed and ultimately landed them the opportunity to compete in the state tournament.
With star weight classes at 165 lbs and 285 lbs, alongside many other solid wrestlers at 120 lbs, 126 lbs, and 132 lbs Coach Choates believes this team is young, hungry, and ready for the state tournament. “This team is going to be really good, we have the ability to make it out of regionals and compete at sectionals.” The 4th place winner of the Region tournament, junior Joseph Stripling, says “I encourge them [my teammates] and remind them how great we are. Some days are good, some are bad, but everyday we are all great!” As he positively affirms the athletes, the team has definitely shown their greatness. The Comets’ next stop is the Georgia High School State tournament which will take place in Macon, Geogia on Feb. 17 and Feb.18, where they will face more competition and attempt to bring home an SG victory. Samuel McDaniel who placed 4th in state sectionals and Henrique Smith who placed 6th will both be competing in the state tournament. Best of luck to the Samuel, Henrique, Coach Choates, and the wrestling team as they pin down another victory in Macon next week.
